Was built by King Kawanthissa some 2000 BC and the husband of Queen Viharamahadevi.
King Kelanithissa, who ruled Kelaniya which is near Colombo was the father of Queen Viharamahadevi.
The temple sits on top of the rock with magnificent scenic views of Kirinda town, and as its back drop, vistas of beaches, sand dunes and the Indian Ocean. To reach its summit there are steps cut into rock and a recent addition of paved stairs.
At its summit you will observe statues of Lord Buddha, Queen Viharamahadevi, a Stupa, the Devalaya, a Bo tree (Bodhimandapaya) and its temple. Kirinda Rajamaha Viharaya is a place well worth visiting!
