Hambantota

Is primarily a fishing port that now enjoys a new major sea port due to Chinese funding, an airport to service international destinations and a test status cricket stadium. The Governments plans are to convert Hambantota into a second major industrial hub to that of Colombo. A special economic zone has been proposed.

Bundala national park is in the vicinity. The park is a wintering area for migratory water birds and other wildlife including the shy pangolin and playful monkeys. There are over 197 species of birds including the greater flamingo. The Mirijjawila Botanic Gardens are close by.
