Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was created in 1975 as a shelter and a care place for wounded and ill-treated and abandoned baby elephants.
One of the daily activities consists in feeding baby elephants with milk (around 8.00am), however feeding times may change and river bathing of the elephants.
When they are taken to bath in the Ma Oya river (around 10.00 am and 2.30pm) the elephants lie down on the shallow riverbed, where their carers/mahouts scrub and clean their body. A real delight to see.
A mix of rice, maize and other vegetation with jackfruit leaves, coconut tree branches and Kithul tree branches are used to feed the elephants.
