Lankatilaka Vihara (Monastery)

A mere kilometre away stands the commanding Lankatilaka Vihara (monastery), a splendid example of architecture during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV who made Gampola the capital of Sri Lanka during the mid-fourteenth century. Built on natural rock, the temple uses stone, plaster and wood within its traditional Sinhalese design and constructive style. It houses many ancient paintings which attracts people from far afield.
