Kalpitiya is a marine sanctuary situated midway on the west coast of Sri Lanka, a spit of land that offers beautiful beaches, delightful array of hotels and various venues for water related sports, such as kite surfing, whale, dolphin, dugong, and sea turtles watching boat trips.
When approaching Kalpitiya the salt flats replace coconut plantations. In addition, there are mangrove swamps and vast sand dune beaches to visit. The beaches invite you to indulge in sunbathing and laze by the sea shore or take a dip. A site of interest to visit is a well preserved old Dutch era Fort.
The area is predominately occupied by local fishermen, although tourism is becoming an important part of the area.
